The Alabama High School Athletic Association has allowed the playoffs to continue today after events were canceled last week due to the H1N1 Influenza A virus, also known as swine flu.

Three Huntsville school systems were re-opened Monday. Two probable swine flu cases were discovered in a Madison elementary school last week.

“While we apologize for the disruption of our original playoff schedule, we made the safe decision for the children of this state and also ensured that students at all our member schools would have the opportunity to participate in our post-season athletic events,” AHSAA executive director Steve Savarese said in a prepared statement.

The new schedule will resume today with area tournaments for No. 2 Pleasant Home and No. 4 Straughn.

Andalusia will play its area tournament on Wednesday.

The Lady Eagles will start their tournament at 9 a.m. at the Andalusia Sports Complex and will follow a double elimination format; Straughn will play a best two-out-of-three tournament against Luverne in Straughn starting at 3 p.m.; and Andalusia will follow a double elimination format at the Andalusia Sports Complex starting at 9 a.m.

The Andalusia golf team and the Florala track and field team will return to their playoff schedules today as well. Florala will participate in the state track meet in Gulf Shores from Thursday through Saturday, and Andalusia will participate in the sub-state golf tournament today in Pelham.
