For the newly formed Andalusia Post 80 American Legion baseball team, having a successful first season has been a top priority.
On Monday night, the team defeated the Opp Pre-Majors baseball team in a doubleheader, 19-9 and 10-2.
Already this season the Post 80 team has hosted a round robin wood bat tournament at Andalusia High School and played in several tournaments within the district.
This weekend, the team will travel to Troy to play in another wood bat tournament with Enterprise and Millbrook, two teams in their district.
Andalusia coach Chase Arrington said the season so far has gone well.
“It’s going good,” Arrington said. “We’ve played some quality teams and we’ve grown as a team and learned to play together, which is a good thing — having guys that have never played together coming from different schools.”
Arrington the most important games the team has played are the district games.
“I would say they would have been against the other Legion teams in our district,” he said. “Such as Millbrook and Enterprise. In addition, there are some upcoming games as well such as the district tournament July 8 and then the state tournament on July 17.”
The Post 80 team has a record of 9-5 as of Wednesday. Arrington said the team has progressed a lot since the beginning of the season.
“From the beginning, they didn’t know what the coaches expected,” Arrington said. “Now, they know and we’ve grown and we’ve improved on some things.
“There have been some days where we didn’t play our best, but we have improved and gotten better as a team.”
