Florala’s Zach Fleming ran in four touchdowns bring his team to a 26-0 shutout over J.F. Shields on Friday night in Beatrice.
“They did what we told them to do,” Florala coach Stan Gooden said. “We still made a ton of mistakes, but a win is a win.”
Gooden said after the 35-0 jamboree loss to New Brockton last week, his team “regrouped” and worked hard for Friday night.
“Especially at our jamboree game, we didn’t play real well,” he said. “We went back and regrouped this week and the kids responded to it. They played football (Friday night) even though we also have a lot of guys banged up.”
Gooden said the defense did not let up the whole game.
“J.F. Shields is a real athletic team and they have a lot of speed,” he said. “At times, they moved the ball down on us. But, when they got on our end, we were ready for them.”
During the game, Florala’s Houston Biddle was rushed to the emergency room for dehydration and is a probable for next week.
In addition, Zach Taylor hurt his knee during play.
Florala will host McKenzie next week in its first Class 1A, Region 2 game of the season.
“We’re banged up and we’ll figure something out next week,” Gooden said. “We’re going to enjoy this first win.”
