The Straughn Lady Tigers swept the Opp Lady Bobcats on Thursday night in volleyball action at Straughn High School.

The Lady Tigers took a commanding lead in the first game, winning, 25-3. In the second game, Straughn struggled a little bit due to “confusion,” but quickly came back and defeated Opp by nine points. The third game saw a regrouped Straughn defense and offense, which took Opp by 16 points.

“I was proud of our hitting and that’s coming along,” Straughn coach Lori Kinsaul said after the victory Thursday. “It’s the beginning of the season and I want to see them grow. I’ll continue to look for that growth each game.”

In the second game, Opp lead early but Straughn was able to move back in front and eventually take the game.

“We got a little confused on our rotation and got mixed up,” Kinsaul said. “It takes repetition for them to work it out.”

For Opp coach Christie Spurlin, the loss came down to a lack of teamwork.

“We just didn’t work together as a team,” Spurlin said. “Our passing wasn’t that great, but we’re going to work on that. We have a young team this year.”

Straughn’s Stephanie Bracewell led the Lady Tigers (2-1) with five aces, 19 service points, nine assists, two digs and one kill.

New Brockton 3,

Red Level 1

In other volleyball action Thursday night, Red Level lost to New Brockton in four games, 25-22, 12-25, 20-25, 16-25.

Red Level came out and won the first game, but New Brockton took care of the rest, winning the following three.

Red Level coach Heather Walden said the team is still working out the kinks.

“We are still struggling with our game,” Walden said. “Two of my starters who have been battling the flu returned yesterday, but are nowhere near 100 percent.

“We played OK the first game but we have a lot to work on before our first area matches on Sept. 9,” she said. “We are back in action on Tuesday against Luverne and I hope that everyone is well and we play our game.”

Red Level’s Desi Crain led her team with three set assists and 16 service points.

Straughn will be hosting Flomaton next Tues., Sept. 1, at 4 p.m.; Opp will host Zion Chapel on Mon., Aug 31 at 4 p.m.; and Red Level will travel to play Luverne on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
