Watch and see, a good 1st round of football is upon us

It’s shaping up to be a good night of high school football, as three of our county teams will be competing in the first round of the state playoffs.
Andalusia, Opp and Straughn all will be vying for a chance to play another week of this coveted sport in Alabama athletics.
Andalusia and Opp will be facing each other in Opp Friday night for “Round 2” and Straughn will be hosting Geneva.
This will be the first time that Andalusia and Opp will be meeting two weeks in a row in school history for both teams, and Straughn will make its second straight first-round appearance in the playoffs.
Another interesting fact about each matchup is the teams’ records going into Friday night’s games.
Andalusia and Opp have identical season records at 6-4, while Straughn is currently sitting at 7-3.
Geneva is one of two teams in the Class 3A playoffs that has a losing record, at 4-6. Montevallo is the other.
But don’t let the 4-6 record for Geneva fool you into thinking Straughn will win easily. Geneva finished its regular season with a region record of 3-4 in the loaded Region 2.
Geneva’s closest region loss came against currently undefeated Pike County, where they lost by just one point at 13-12.
Pike County will be hosting Luverne, who lost to Straughn in week nine, 28-6.
Andalusia is having a turnaround season of its own. Last season, the Bulldogs never made it to the playoffs, ending the season with a 2-8 record.
This is the first time since 2007 that Andalusia will be making an appearance in the state playoffs. That year, the Bulldogs made it to the third round, losing to Central-Tuscaloosa, 47-7.
This year is looking to be a good year for the Bulldogs with the help of a solid defense and running game.
Last week, Andalusia had 227 rushing yards, compared to Opp’s 110.
So, it’s looking to be another Opp offense against an Andalusia defense this week as both meet for another round.
It’s going to be a great week for area football action in Covington County.
