Opp hopes to even area record tonight

Tonight, the Opp Bobcats hope to even up their area record on the road at Bullock County in Union Springs.

The Bobcats lost their first area game on Dec. 8 to St. James. St. James’ full-court press helped them to the 47-33 win over Opp.

Opp coach Ronnie Sansom said the game tonight should be a “big” one.

“I think it’s a very winnable game,” Sansom said. “Bullock is not having a typical year for them.

“It’s going to be an opportunity for us to even up our area record and kind of go into next week’s Christmas tournament at Daleville on a positive note and be full swing for area play in January,” he said. “So, as far as area goes, it’s very big for us.”

In the last few games for the Bobcats, ball handling has proven to be a problem, Sansom said.

“That’s cost us,” he said. “Two of our last five games we lost strictly due to turnovers. We haven’t played a big role in games as far as the score. We’ve got to take care of the basketball and pressure the ball a little more on defense.”

Sansom added that during games it is not a matter of “finding shots,” but making them count is what matters.

“Our shot selection hasn’t been bad, but sometimes the shots we’ve taken have not been where I want them to be,” he said. “We’ve just got to start knocking them down. Against Daleville the other night, we missed some easy shots on the putback and it’s to the point now you’ve got to have those and make those shots.”

They lost that game Monday night, 51-40.

After the Daleville loss, Sansom said the players have come back and were receptive in wanting to correct their mistakes.

“The last few days have been pretty good,” Sansom said. “The attitude has been real good, despite some tough losses here recently. They’re showing up and acknowledging what they did wrong and are taking the coaching and trying to improve.

“We’re getting better at something every day at practice,” he said. “If we can put it all together in a game, then I think we’re going to be fine.”

Tip off tonight in Union Springs is at 4:30 starting with the B-team.
