Bobcats win memorial

The Opp Bobcats defeated Florala and Andalusia on Saturday at the second annual Benny Gantt Memorial tournament at Merchants Field.
In spite of the cold weather, the Bobcats claimed a 17-3 win over the Wildcats in five innings and beat the Bulldogs 10-1 to close out the day.
In the second game of the day, Andalusia beat Florala, 14-1.
Opp 17, Florala 3
The Bobcats scored seven runs in the first inning, six in the second and four in the fourth inning to get the win.
Opp’s Josh Thompson was 2-for-2; Alex Banks was 1-for-1; Gavin Free was 1-for-2; Hunter Wilson and Brady Hall had one hit each; and Dillan Ziglar and Steadman Gerber had two hits each. Gerber hit a three-run home run in the win. In addition, Hunter Jones and Tyler Harrison had one hit each.
On the mound, Jones earned the win, pitching 3.2 innings and Harrison got the save pitching 1.2 innings.
Andalusia 14, Florala 1
Information on the second game between Andalusia and Florala was not available at press time Monday.
Opp 10, Andalusia 1
Opp’s Gavin Free pitched 5 innings, giving up one earned run to help lead his team to the nine-point victory.
Josh Thompson was 2-for-5; Alex Banks was 1-for-2 with one home run; Gavin Free and Dillan Ziglar had two hits each; and Steadman Gerber and Lance Robbins had one hit each.
The Bobcats scored six runs in the second inning and four in the third on 10 hits.
Andalusia scored its only run in the fourth inning.
“I was pleased how we came out against Andalusia being that’s our rival,” Opp coach Michael Cassady said. “We were a little flat against Florala at the start.
“Our toughest match will be this weekend,” he said. “We play Luverne on Friday. They are a very good baseball team. We’ll get tested on Friday.”
