Florala JV softball team wins tourney

Florala defeated Red Level 5-4 in the championship game on Saturday at Florala’s junior varsity softball tournament.
In their first game of the day, the Lady Wildcats took advantage of Paxton’s pitching struggles and managed to score 15 runs.
Red Level beat Paxton in the second game of the day scoring six runs in the last inning .
In the last game before the single elimination tournament began, Florala fell to Red Level 5-1.
In single elimination play, Florala eliminated Paxton from the tournament scoring four runs in the third inning alone.
Florala’s Lyndsee Edward, Kendyl McDaniel, Lindsay Hammac and Paige Irwin all scored for their team in the third inning.
In the championship game, between Red Level and Florala, the international rule was used to decide the outcome.
Florala’s Keerie Kimbril was on second base and scored the winning run on an RBI single from Hammac.
“This was a great tournament with three great teams,” Florala coach Roger Hammonds said. “I was really proud of how our group played with heart and showed some grit to win the tournament.
“This was a great weekend from the weather to the games,” he said. “I really appreciate all the help from the parents that makes things like this a success.”
Florala will host McKenzie today in area play at 4 p.m.
