Andalusia tennis team gets 1st loss of season

Andalusia lost its first tennis match of the season Tuesday in the Andalusia Invitational tennis tournament at Lurleen B. Wallace Community College.

Andalusia (8-1) lost to UMS-Wright 6-0 in both boys and girls singles action.

However, Andalusia came back to pounce on Jackson, winning 5-1 in boys singles and 6-0 in girls singles.

The invitational was held for the teams in Andalusia’s sectional. The teams that played in the tournament were UMS-Wright, Jackson, Opp and W.S. Neal.

“We feel like we’ve got to improve,” Andalusia coach Perry Dillard said. “We still have a lot of tennis that we’re still playing, and we’re going to keep on plugging on.”

UMS-Wright boys 6, Andalusia boys 0

UMS-Wright’s Haas Byrd defeated Andalusia’s Jake Ricardy, 8-0; UMS-Wright’s Brunson Wessinger defeated Andalusia’s Mitchell Clark, 8-1; and UMS-Wright’s Manning Courtney defeated Andalusia’s Mayur Patel, 8-0.

Andalusia’s Alex Evans, Jackson Moore and Chris Smith fell to UMS-Wright’s Dax Harvey, Martin Cunningham and William Hooper in seeds four through six, respectively.

UMS-Wright’s Courtney Johns def. Andalusia’s Aubrey Boyington, 8-0; UMS-Wright’s McKenzie Courtney def. Andalusia’s Tally Morrow, 8-0; and UMS-Wright’s Caroline Harris def. Andalusia’s Lauren Beasley, 8-0.

Andalusia’s Kaitlyn Jeter, Anna Bay McCord and Maggie Jones fell to UMS-Wright’s Sarah Catherine King, Hastings Johnson and Darby Radcliff in seeds four through six, respectively.

Jackson boys 1

Ricardy def. Jackson’s Will Law, 8-5; Jackson’s Gino Perez def. Clark, 8-4; and Patel def. Jackson’s Justin Abston, 10-8.

Evans, Moore and Jonathan Wiggins defeated Jackson’s Derrick Moore, Lakeith Austin and Dejoun Barnett in seeds four through six, respectively.

Boyington def. Jackson’s Carnesha McConnell, 8-6; Morrow def. Jackson’s Kaneisha Martin, 8-2; and Beasley def. Jackson’s Sophia Hussain, 8-2.

Jeter, McCord and Jones defeated Jackson’s Mercedes Perez, Kourtne Scott and Sarah Bales Barry in seeds four through six, respectively.
