GULF SHORES — Straughn sailed through day one at the Class 3A South Regional Softball Tournament Friday at the Gulf Shores Sports Complex.
The Lady Tigers beat Abbeville 4-0, scoring four runs in the sixth inning, and defeated Geneva in the nightcap 7-1.
“It was nice to win that one,” Straughn coach Ray Wilson said about the 7-1 win over Geneva. “Geneva has a real good softball team. We got a few runs early and I think that was big.”
Straughn will continue its trek in the regional tournament today at 11 a.m. against Area 3 runner-up Luverne, who defeated Headland 5-4, and Slocomb 5-1 Friday.

The Lady Tigers (30-11-1) got things started in the first inning when Kaitlynn Wiggins scored on an error.

Geneva added its one run in the third inning.
Winning pitcher Wiggins struck out 11, allowed one hit and one run.
Straughn added three runs in the fourth inning when Kayla Teel, S. Bracewell and Wiggins crossed the plate.

Straughn 4, Abbeville 0
Straughn’s Kayla Messer hit a two-run triple in the bottom of the sixth inning to break the scoreless tie, and help lead her team to the victory over Abbeville.
The Lady Tigers and Abbeville put up a strong defensive effort throughout the game Friday afternoon.
Winning pitcher Katy Messick allowed six hits, no runs and struck out 10 in seven innings.
“The defense kept us in the game because we weren’t hitting the ball this morning,” Wilson said.
Before Messer hit her two-run triple, S. Bracewell and Wiggins reached on base with singles.
Messer’s triple scored Bracewell and Wiggins. Later in the sixth inning, Straughn’s Tiffany Taylor singled courtesy runner Hannah Twitter home, and T. Bracewell scored on a pop up by Johns.

Teel was 3-for-3 with three singles; Johns was 2-for-3 with two singles and one RBI; Taylor was 2-for-3 with two singles and one RBI; Wiggins was 2-for-3 with one single, one double and one run; S.
