Karate students chop down competition

Eleven members of Andalusia Isshinryu Karate attended the USYKA Traditional Karate tournament in Bessemer on May 1 and placed in the top five in each of their respective division.

Students competed in weapons, forms and fighting divisions for their age and belt rank.

Andalusia students placed as follows:

• Tyler Myrick — first place, green belt weapons; first place, green belt kata; and first place, green belt fighting

• Alex Myrick— second place, green belt weapons; and first place, green belt kata

• Abram Guilford — first place, white/yellow belt kata; and first place, white/yellow belt fighting

• Allen Butler — first place, black belt musical kata; and first place, black belt youth fighting

• Marie Josey — fourth place, green belt kata; and second place, green belt sparring

• Hogan Nichols — third place, youth black belt kata; and second place, black belt musical kata

• Reese Burkhardt — third place, green belt kata; and second place, green belt weapons

• Rusty Mears — third place, senior green/brown belt weapons; third place, senior green/brown belt kata; and fourth place, senior green/brown belt fighting

• Rexanne Butler — fourth place, brown belt weapons; and fourth place, brown belt kata

• Rex Butler — first place, senior green/brown belt weapons; and second place, senior green/brown belt kata

• Colin Marcum — third place, green belt fighting.
