As part of the Upward Bound program at LBW Community College.

Pat Powell, program counselor and curriculum coordinator, said the students take classes in math, science, English, Spanish and social science.

Powell said students completed the first week of the six week program Thursday.

The program isn’t all work and no play though, she said.

“students also enjoy volleyball, basketball, softball, yoga and aerobics,” she said.

Powell said the program services high schoolers who will be first generation college students, to prepare them to not only to do well in high school, but also to prepare them for college.

“After graduating from high school, the Upward Bound program staff and faculty mentor the graduates through a summer college session at LBWCC,” she said. “Currently we have seven students attending college classes during the first session. Many of the students remain at LBWCC and complete two-year degrees, while some transfer to other universities.”

In addition to attending LBW for the six weeks during the summer, students must meet 18 Saturdays between September and May until graduation from high school.
