County hires 3 new coaches for school year

The 2010-2011 athletic season will begin with at least a new coach at the helm of Florala’s football program and new assistant coaches in two other county schools.

Board members voted Tuesday to hire Christopher Buckler as new head football coach at Florala High School. Principal Donny Powell said Buckler comes to Florala from John Carroll Catholic School in Birmingham. He is dually certified to teach both physical education and social studies.

The board also hired Cody McCain as an assistant football coach and new history teacher at Pleasant Home, and named Marc Tracy assistant basketball coach and science teacher at Straughn.

The board also acted on several other personnel matters, which follow.

At the central office:

• Accepted the retirement resignation of Phyllis Gantt as alternative school teacher retroactive to June 1.

At Fleeta Junior High:

• Transferred Crystal Nelson from Fleeta to teacher at Straughn Elementary.

At Florala High School:

• Employed Jonathan Stinson as middle school/high school science teacher.

At Pleasant Home School:

• Employed Stephanie Smith as bus driver.

• At Red Level School:

• Employed Allen Catrett as secondary math teacher.

• Employed Jennifer Withrow as English teacher.

• Employed Traci Driver Bell as English teacher.

• Accepted the resignation of Bridget Harper as elementary teacher.

• Transferred Kriston Bush from junior high math teacher to elementary teacher.

• Agreed to employ a math teacher as soon as suitable applicant can be found.

At Straughn Elementary School:

• Transferred Jenna Grissett to fifth grade teacher at her request.

• Accepted the retirement resignation of Rhonda Richards as elementary teacher retroactive to June 1.

At Straughn Middle School:

• Non-renewed the contract of Regina Turner as custodian.

At Florala City Middle School:

• Non-renewed the contract of Tammy Adams as bookkeeper/secretary.
