What to do this 4th of July

In Andalusia:

The City of Andalusia cordially invites the community to its annual 4th of July event on Sun., July 4.

Located at the Kiwanis fair grounds, gates will open at 6 p.m. with musical entertainment by Smoke & Lace beginning at 6:30. Fireworks show to follow at approximately 8:30. Free watermelon slices will be served while they last!

The “Great Red Level Homecoming 2010” will be held July 3 downtown.

The day will kick off with a pancake and sausage breakfast at 7:30 a.m., at the new FEMA building on County Road 107 in the main business district.

The recently restored fire siren will kick off the day’s festivities in the Crystal Springs picnic park, where there will be singing and vendors set up around 10 a.m.

For lunch barbecue sandwiches will be served for $5 each.

“We will have local entertainment, a karaoke contest and a fireworks show will end the night at 9 p.m. on Saturday”, mayor Mike Purnell said.

In Opp:

The annual city of Opp Fourth of July celebration will be held Sat., July 3, at Frank Jackson State Park.

Opp Mayor H.D. Edgar said the staff at Frank Jackson State Park has agreed to allow event-goers into the park for free after noon.

Hot dogs will be available at 4 p.m., and a fireworks show will begin at sundown.

Edgar said the fireworks will be visible from three points in the park – the handicapped portion off of Opine Road, the point off the island and the boat ramp.

There will also be music and karaoke prior to the fireworks display, Edgar said.
