Straughn’s Lady Tigers took a 2-0 lead in their area Tuesday night after defeating Ashford and Headland.

Straughn beat Ashford 25-12, 25-13, 25-23; and in the night cap, won over Headland 25-14, 25-15, 25-14.

The Lady Tigers got off to a good start last Thursday night in their season-opener against Elba. They won 25-16, 23-25, 25-17, 22-25, 15-11.

Despite not having junior starter Holley McGlaun for the first three games of the season, SHS coach Lori Kinsaul said the team is doing “exceptionally well.”

“I don’t have everybody yet, and I’m really proud of the girls because they’re doing exceptionally well,” Kinsaul said. “Losing Holley is a big deal, and Brooke (Harris) is doing an amazing job.

“Brooke has never played setter, and she is now,” she said.

McGlaun broker her fibula in her right leg, and will visit the doctor next Tuesday for a check up.

On the Elba win last week, Kinsaul said the team kept “battling.”

“They got down and kept battling back,” she said. “They did a great job. We’re just working every day. We’re trying to get better every day.”

In addition to getting McGlaun back from an injury, Straughn (3-0, 2-0 in Class 4A, Area 3) will have help at the front middle position from transfer student Paige Caraway. Caraway is a senior this year, who transferred to Straughn from Andalusia High School.

Kinsaul said Caraway will be able to join the team once she is “cleared” to play.

“I’ve never had any height, and this is exciting,” Kinsaul said.
