MONTGOMERY(AP) — A court fight is being waged over the decision by Gov. Bob Riley’s administration to end the payroll deductions that have allowed organizations representing state employees to pump millions into political campaigns.

The Riley administration announced in August that it would cut off payroll deductions for state employees who contribute to the political action committees of the Alabama State Employees Association, the Alabama Education Association and the Alabama State Troopers Association. The administration argued they were against state law.

AEA and ASEA got Montgomery Circuit Judge Truman Hobbs Jr. to issue a preliminary injunction allowing the deductions to resume pending a full hearing on the case.

Riley’s state finance director, Bill Newton, said Wednesday the administration is appealing to the Alabama Supreme Court.
