The identities of the county workers fired for allegedly stealing county-owned property were identified Thursday.

County Administrator Brenda Petty confirmed to The Star-News that William Mayhall and Gary Musgrove have been terminated. The two men worked in the road department and county shop, she said; however, she would not comment on other personnel matters, including the suspensions of additional employees, revolving around the alleged thefts.

“I’m not at liberty to discuss the reason for termination or pending discipline of other employees,” Petty said.

According to county jail reports, Mayhall was jailed on Thurs., Oct. 28, on charges of second-degree theft of property, a felon, and later released on a $10,000 bond. Musgrove was taken into custody on Fri., Oct. 29, and charged with third-degree theft of property, a misdemeanor, and released on a $3,000 bond.

Tuesday, Chairman Lynn Sasser stated the allegations were “still under investigation,” but confirmed that additional arrests would be forthcoming.

“It’s a sad day when people steal,” he said.

Sheriff Dennis Meeks has also confirmed there is an ongoing investigation; however, he continues to decline to release any specifics about the case.
