Andalusia’s girls varsity basketball team held Elba to 10 points in the first half on Monday, and went on to beat the Lady Tigers 63-27 at the 13th annual Red Level Invitational Christmas tournament.
Four Lady Bulldogs scored in double figures to help lead their team to the 36-point win.
Andalusia will face Brantley today at 3 p.m. in its next game of the tournament.
Alexis Horton led Andalusia with 15 points; Alison Daniels and Shi’Amber Townsend added 12 points each; and Tylesha Malcolm chipped in 11 points in the win.
The Lady Bulldogs shot out to a 16-2 lead on a 14-0 run with 2:16 left in the first period, and outscored the Lady Tigers 13-6 in the second period to take a 33-10 lead at half time.
AHS girls coach Bennie Shellhouse said his team played “better” on Monday.
“I thought we played a lot better than we have,” Shellhouse said. “We did a lot of good cuts to the basket and getting open. Our defense looked a lot better than it’s looked.”
The second half wasn’t any better for Elba. The Lady Tigers were plagued with turnovers, which Andalusia took advantage of to convert into field goals from the paint and within the perimeter.
Andalusia held a 52-15 lead after the third period, but Elba managed to outscore the Lady Bulldogs in the final quarter 12-11.
Elba’s K. Edwards led the Lady Tigers with 10 points. S. Sams added seven points and R. Singletary and Heather Hammonds had four points each.
Andalusia’s Alectricia Barnes also had a good day shooting six points.
Additionally, Shellhouse said the girls will have to step it up on defense against Brantley today.
“We just need to play good defense,” he said.
