Vying for the clinch

Andalusia’s girls basketball team has a chance to clinch the regular season area title tonight, when the Lady Bulldogs play host to Ashford.
The Lady Bulldogs are in a good position for the clinch because they have beaten the Lady Yellow Jackets and Headland once already, and Straughn twice.
“We set ourselves up in a good position to win the regular season area because we’ve already beat both of those teams (Straughn and Headland),” AHS girls coach Bennie Shellhouse said. “With Asfhord, we had beat them soundly at their place, so I think we’ll have an opportunity (tonight) to win our area.”
The Lady Bulldogs (16-4, 4-0 in Class 4A, Area 3) beat Asfhord on the road 66-32 on Jan. 11.
Shellhouse said he just wants the team to keep “improving,” especially from a turnover stand point.
“We just want to keep on improving on — if there’s one thing we need to improve on is not having as many turnovers,” he said. “We play up tempo and get into everything, and end up having many turnovers.”
Additionally on those turnovers, Shellhouse said the girls tend to get ahead of themselves with the ball.
“They get on a fast break, and instead of pulling it out and setting it up, or you know waiting on a cut or for two people, it ends up in a turnover or a missed shot that we could’ve got a better shot out of,” he said. “That’s something we talked about (Wedensday).”
Tip off tonight is around 5:45 p.m.
