Opp girls win 3-2 over PHS

The Opp Lady Bobcats squeaked by Pleasant Home to get a 3-2 victory Friday night at the annual Kirsten L. Dean softball tournament at Straughn High School.

With this win, the Lady Bobcats will enter today’s single elimination bracket as the No. 1 seed in Pool B. The Lady Bobcats will play at 4 p.m. today against the winner of the noon game between the No. 2 seed in Pool A and the No. 3 seed in Pool B.

Earlier Friday, Opp beat Flomaton 8-5 in the first game of Friday’s contests. In the second game, Pleasant Home fell to Flomaton 9-5.

Opp 3, Pleasant Home 2

Winning 3-2, Opp senior Courtney Mobley threw the tying run out at home plate at the end of the sixth inning to help lead the Lady Bobcats to the one-run victory.

“It was a barn-burner,” OHS head softball coach Jimmy Reeves said. “It was a good ball game, and the way a game is supposed to be played.”

B.A. Spurlin had two hits and two RBIs, and Laiken Free had an RBI for Opp.

Sidney Jones pitched the complete game to earn the win.

“It was just one of those deals,” PHS head softball coach Bradley Stephens said. “We played well. We payed jam-up defense.”

Flomaton 9, Pleasant Home 5

Megan Cook was 3-for-3 with two singles and one double for Pleasant Home.

Trailing 3-0, The Lady Eagles scored three runs in the first inning on RBIs from Jorand McGhee, Robyn Weaver and Cook to scored Caitlin Jernigan, McGhee and Ashley Copeland.

McGhee was 2-for-4 with two singles and one run; Weaver, Abigail Kelley and Krissie Herman were 1-for-3 each with one single apiece; and Copeland and Jernigan were 1-for-4 each.

Pleasant Home added one run in the third inning when Copeland scored on an RBI double by Cook.

The Lady Eagles added one additional run in the sixth on an error.

Avery Godwin was 2-for-5 with one home run; and H. Lambeth was 4-for-5 with four singles for Flomaton.

Opp 8, Flomaton 5

Opp’s Octavia Thompson was 3-for-3 with two runs to help lead the Lady Bobcats to the three-run win.

Jones pitched three innings, struck out three and allowed three hits.

Anna Harrelson earned the save, pitching three innings and had two strikeouts.

The Lady Bobcats scored two runs in the first inning, one run in the second inning and five runs in the fourth inning.

Opp will play at 4 p.m. today, and Pleasant Home will face Andalusia today at noon.
