Andalusia’s boys and girls tennis teams booked another trip to the state tournament with a second place finish Tuesday at the Class 4A, Section 1 tournament at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center in Mobile.

AHS scored 42 points, 21 points less than the first place winner, UMS-Wright.

Andalusia and UMS-Wright had a bye in the first round of play, but won the following rounds against Saraland, W.S. Neal and Jackson. Andalusia’s only loss came in the finals against UMS-Wright.

“Everybody played well,” AHS boys tennis coach Perry Dillard said by telephone. “On the boys side, we took care of business early. UMS is a really good team.

“Hopefully, we’ll get to meet up with them in the finals week in the state tournament, and have another chance at them,” he said.

Andalusia advances to the Class 4A state tournament, which will be held April 28-29 at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center in Mobile.

Dillard added that the girls also played well in their sectional run.

When the day was over, Dillard said the team was “frustrated” that the “other” Bulldog team won the tournament.

“Everybody was frustrated to have them come in first, but they’re still excited that our season isn’t over, and that they will go on to play next week in the state tournament,” he said. “They’re just excited to keep on continuing to play. Getting to the state tournament is so important because anything can happen.”
