All-Stars district tourneys begin Friday

Starting tomorrow, local All-Star baseball teams will begin their quest for a state title, as the district tournaments get under way in Opp, Brewton, East Brewton and Elba.

The 8-and-under district tournament will take place in Opp from June 25-28, where the Evergreen, East Brewton, South Alabama (Andalusia) and Opp All-Star teams will compete in a double elimination bracket. The first games between Evergreen and East Brewton, and South Alabama and Opp begin Saturday night.

In Brewton, the 10-and-under All-Stars begin Friday night in an eight-team pool play format.

Covington County, South Alabama and Opp are the local teams competing in the tournament, where the eight teams are split up into two divisions — the American and National Division.

Covington County is on the American Division, and South Alabama and Opp are on the National Division.

There will be four games played each day from Friday until Sunday in pool play.

The tournament will transition to a championship format on Monday, where the semifinals begin at 2 p.m. between the No. 1 and No. 2 teams from each division. The other semifinal game is at 4 p.m., and the championship game begins at 7 p.m.

The 12-and-under district tournament in East Brewton will take place June 24-28.

South Alabama, Covington County and Opp will play Evergreen, Brewton and East Brewton in a six-team double elimination format.

South Alabama and East Brewton gets a bye in the first round, and will face the winners of the Evergreen-Covington County and Opp-Brewton games on Saturday.

In the 15-year-old Babe Ruth league, Opp and Covington County will square off at 8 p.m. tomorrow in Elba in a four-team tournament.

The winner and runner-up from each district tournament advance to the state tournament.
