Local All-Stars finish 2nd

Brewton’s 10-and-under All-Stars softball team beat South Alabama 19-1 Sunday afternoon to claim the 2011 Babe Ruth state title at the Andalusia Sports Complex.

Prior to Sunday’s championship game, Brewton beat South Alabama 11-1; Alex City eliminated Covington County, winning 20-16 in the loser’s bracket; and South Alabama eliminated Alex City with a 23-4 loser’s bracket championship win.

In 8-and-under action, Covington County beat South Alabama 11-7 on Sunday.

10-and-under

Brewton 19,

South Alabama 1

Brewton scored four runs each in the first inning and second inning; scored three runs in the third; five runs in the fourth inning; and three runs in the fifth.

Runner-up South Alabama’s lone run came in the fourth inning.

South Alabama 23,

Alex City 4

The Andalusia team strutted to a huge lead in the first inning, scoring 13 runs to take an early 13-3 lead.

South Alabama added one run in the third inning and nine runs in the fourth inning to get the victory.

Millicient Manring, Tylin Sheridan, Valerie Tomberlin and Faith Wilson had one hit each for South Alabama.

Alex City 20, Covington County 16

The game went back and forth between Alex City and Covington County during action Saturday.

Both teams shared four leads total during the game.

Covington County scored seven runs in the third inning to tie the game up at 7-7.

Alex City added four runs in the fourth inning to take an 11-7 lead; Covington County scored seven runs in the fifth inning to lead 15-11; and Alex City added six runs in the sixth inning and five runs in the seventh inning to get the win.

Brewton 11,

South Alabama 1

Brewton scored three runs in the second inning, five runs in the fourth inning and three runs in the fifth inning in the win.

South Alabama scored one run in the third inning.

Manring scored South Alabama’s one run in the third inning on an RBI single from Zaria Jones.

8-and-under

Covington County 11, South Alabama 7

Trailing 3-1 after the first inning, Covington County’s 8-and-under All-Stars softball team mounted a late attack, and beat South Alabama 11-7 to win the 2011 Babe Ruth state tournament at the Andalusia Sports Complex on Saturday.

Covington County scored three runs in the third inning, six runs in the fourth inning and one run in the fifth inning to take the four-run win.

South Alabama added two runs each in the fourth and sixth innings in the loss.

Covington County’s Natalie Schwartz and Tori Hicks were 3-for-3 each; and Hope Ramer, Sydney Arnett and Ashlyn Joyner were 2-for-3 each.

South Alabama’s Ava Bailey was 4-for-4; Erin Riley, Sydney Ray, Ava Ramsden and Alyssa Stewart were 2-for-4 each; and Brooke Mancil was 3-for-4.
