Opp head football coach Jack Whigham said his defense did what it always does Friday night in his Bobcats’ 16-13 win over Luverne at Channel-Lee Stadium.
“They did it again,” Whigham said. “They’ve played well all year long.
“They played well against Daleville last week,” he said. “I’m just very pleased with what they’ve done.”
The Bobcats opened their scoring with a 17-yard field goal by Dylan Northey in the first quarter.
Opp went ahead 10-0 on a 50-yard touchdown pass from T.J. Register to Dane Buckelew in the second quarter. Northey kicked the extra point, which was good.
Luverne scored right before half time to make the score 10-6.
With 5:46 to go in the third quarter, Opp’s Myeke Boyd scored on a 10-yard rush to increase the Bobcats lead to 16-6.
Luverne scored on a 28-yard pass with 1:14 to go in the game and made the PAT.
The Tigers tried an on-side kick, Opp recovered and ran the clock out for the win.
The Bobcats improve to 2-1 overall, and 2-0 in Class 3A, Region 2. Opp will travel to play Geneva next Friday night in region action.
Opp had 13 first downs compared to Luverne’s 17.
Register was 6-of-11 in passing for 126 yards and had one touchdown. Buckelew had two receptions for 95 yards and a touchdown.
Trey Short led Opp in rushing, going 97 yards on 11 carries, and Boyd had 61 yards on 12 carries.
“It’s just a big win for us,” Whigham said. “We’re 2-0 in the region.
“Luverne’s got a really good team,” he said. “It was our first home game and we had a great crowd. When you beat Luverne, you’ve done something. We were very, very fortunate to get the win.”
