Florala to play a physical game

Florala has just come off an open week, and Wildcats head football coach Justin Jones said the team has made the most of it.

“What we’ve done is try and help make us more physical and try to help make use better on all three phases of the game,” Jones said.

The winless Wildcats will play host to Geneva County tonight in their homecoming game at Matthews Field.

Jones said the Bulldogs play “hard” on the field.

“Our kids need to come out and play,” he said. “They’re a quality football team.”

Jones said he’s looking for a few kids on both sides of the ball to have a good game tonight.

“The guys that need to have a good game are Desmond Smiley, Austin McNeil, Ryan Jordan and Colt Jackson,” Jones said. “If those guys have a good game, then we should be all right.”

Against its last two opponents, Florala has come close to winning each game.

The Wildcats fell to rival Pleasant Home 14-13 on Sept. 16, and then lost to J.U. Blacksher 42-35 on Sept. 23.

Jones said finishing close in those games isn’t good enough.

“We’re hoping that our kids would come out and play four quarters (this week),” he said. “We’ll see the way it ends up.”

When asked about any goals going into the second half of the season, Jones said they are still “in tact.”

“We’ve just got to come out and play hard this Friday night,” he said.

Kick off in Florala is at 7 p.m.
