Straughn earns playoff berth

In some late-season theatrics, Straughn secured a berth in the Class 4A state playoffs on Friday night with its 25-8 road victory over Ashford.

Alabama Christian beat Hillcrest-Evergreen last night, and since the Tigers beat ACA earlier this season, SHS will be the No. 4 seed in the first round.

Straughn got on board first when quarterback Zack Turvin scored from 2 yards with 22 seconds left in the first quarter.

Ashford answered with a 33-yard touchdown pass, and the Yellow Jackets led 8-6 at half time.

It was a different ball game for the Tigers in the second half, as they went on to outscore the Yellow Jackets 19-0.

With 10:52 left in the third quarter, junior tailback Chase Short scored on a 4-yard scamper to put his team ahead 12-8.

Devin Scott scored the third touchdown of the night for Straughn from 56 yards.

Short added his second touchdown on a 35-yard scamper, and the extra point attempt was good to give the Tigers a sure victory.
