Thwack!

“Go two! Go two!”

These familiar sounds rang out Wednesday afternoon at the Dwight Mikel Sports Complex as the LBWCC Lady Saints put in one of their last two practices before opening their season at their annual softball tournament.

For exactly one month, the Lady Saints have been toiling away at practice, getting ready for tomorrow’s season opener against Alabama Southern at 9:30 a.m.

LBWCC head softball coach Candace Tucker said the girls have gotten better with every practice.

“The girls are ready to play,” the first-year coach said. “Practice gets monotonous for a while. We’ve got some good teams coming into the tournament.”

Other than LBWCC and Alabama Southern; Enterprise State Community College, Faulkner State, Middle Georgia, Shelton State, East Central, Southern Union and Wallace Dothan will compete in the tournament.

Tucker said Alabama Southern is a pretty solid softball team.

“We’re looking forward to playing them,” she said.

In fact, Lady Saints outfielder Audrey Powell transfered from Alabama Southern this year.

“She’s really excited,” Tucker said about Powell.

Tucker said there haven’t been any positions solidified on the field.

“For us only having 13, everybody’s going to play everywhere,” Tucker said. “Everytime our pitcher changes, our defense will be near about different.”

LBWCC opens its ACCC South conference play on April 6, against Alabama Southern.

Tucker said she’s hoping by the start of the most important time of the season, the girls will be clicking on all cylinders.

“I’m hoping by the time we start playing conference, we’ll have some good experience under our belt,” she said. “It’ll just be a matter of time.”

After the Lady Saints’ first game against Alabama Southern tomorrow, they’ll face Middle Georgia at 2 p.m.

Day two of the tournament continues on Saturday, where LBWCC plays East Central at 9:30 a.m. and then will face Wallace Dothan at 4:15 that afternoon.

Admission to the tournament is $5 for adults, $3 for students and anyone with a college ID gets in for $2. Kids under 5 years old get in free.
