Community Christmas to hold second registration

A low turnout at Saturday’s Community Christmas registration will require a second registration date, Organizer Larry Avery said Monday.
Avery said 296 children were registered to receive holiday presents through the program that serves children from age 2 to 10 residing in only the Andalusia, Pleasant Home, Red Level and Straughn school districts.
“That’s about 150 less from this same point in time last year,” Avery said. “I know there were a lot of other activities like ball tournaments going on. Because of that we’re going to hold another sign up on Thurs., Nov. 14 at 4 p.m. at the Andalusia Public Library.”
Last year, 600 children were serviced through the program; however, that number included an estimated 80 children age 11 and 12. The program no longer serves that age group.
Community Christmas works by having the community adopt and purchase gifts for “angels.” It is recommended that an estimated $60 be spent on each child.
Angels will be placed in area banks and stores such as J.C. Penney, Ansley Place, Walker Business, Goody’s and Walmart.
“I read the sales paper last night, and was looking at the toys,” Avery said. “It’s going to be tough to get some of the things that these kids are asking for since $60 doesn’t buy a lot. Some people do spend more, but I know, to those families, whatever the amount, it means the world.”
Recent figures show that the organization spends approximately $50,000 a year to provide Christmas for needy families.
Additionally, 150 bicycles are distributed each year to children.
In order to determine if the family qualifies for the program, individuals must bring the following documents at the time of the November registration: the picture ID of the parent registering their children, i.e. driver’s license, school ID, work photo ID, etc.
• Birth certificate with documentation of guardianship for each child that is not one’s biological child. Note that only parents and guardians are allowed to register their children. No grandparents, aunts or other individuals unless they are legal guardians.
• Proof of residence such as a current bill or rent receipt that shows one’s physical address. No post office addresses will be accepted.
• Proof of government assistance such as WIC, Medicaid, SSI, etc.
Community members wishing to help make the event possible can submit tax-deductible donations to Andalusia Community Christmas Inc., P.O. Box 1525, Andalusia, AL 36420.
