The River Falls Town Council could increase the pay for the mayor and council members for next term.

Council member Gary Wages brought up the topic at Tuesday night’s meeting.

Wages said he’s losing money being a member.

Town Clerk Mary Ann Andrews said town council members are paid $35 each month and Mayor Patricia Gunter is paid $100 each month.

Gunter told the council they could not vote to give themselves a raise, but could for the next 2016-2020 term.

Gunter said they would look into what procedures are necessary to do that.

Alabama law mandates that councils cannot “fix” salaries not less than six-month months prior to each general municipal election.

The municipal election will be held the fourth Tuesday of August 2016.

According to the Alabama League of Municipalities, if the council fails to take action within the time allowed or takes no action at all, the officers of the succeeding administration will received the same salaries paid to the mayor and council of the last term.

The town boasts 527 residents, according the Census Bureau’s latest estimates.
