Applications are now being accepted for the new First Class Pre-K programs at Pleasant Home and Straughn Elementary Schools.

Last month, it was announced that PHS, SES and Opp Elementary School were selected to have classrooms for the next school year. This would add nearly 50 additional students to the program, which has garnered national attention.

Enrollment is open to all children 4 years of age, who are residents of the state of Alabama. Children must turn 4 on or before Sept. 1.

Acceptance to the program is through random selection

Applicants must meet residency requirements.

Forms must be completed and returned to the respective school by July 8. Parents may register their children Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m., until the deadline.

A drawing will be held at noon, July 15.

SES principal Bettye Ann Older said she was excited about the new program.

“This is going to be really great for our community,” she said. “This program is designed to make our students more school-ready. I am really happy for our students.”

PHS Principal Craig Nichols said he was excited, too.

This is the first year the two schools applied.
