As soon as Jeremy Boyd gets out of his car at the Westhaven Apartment Complex in Andalusia, he’s swarmed with eager and excited children.

Boyd and many of First Baptist Church’s youth group are holding Mission Andalusia, a week long vacation Bible school and missions project this week.

Boyd said the youth meet at the church for breakfast each day before splitting up into two groups to hold VBS at Westhaven and Pineview Apartment Complex.

“It’s just something I’m doing for my Lord,” Boyd said. “I like doing it, but I’m just spreading the word of God like he told us to in the Bible.”

During VBS, which lasts from 10 a.m. until noon, youth and kids play games, craft and hold story time. After lunch, the youth then go and do service projects either at the high school, elementary school or Christian Service Center.

“They work until 3 p.m. every day,” Volunteer and Parent Katie Lee said.

Lee said the church holds Mission Andalusia in the summer and fall.

Lee said the kids from the apartment complexes love the time they get to spend with the youth.

Kyle Powell, a rising sophomore at Andalusia High School, said the week’s going well.

“It’s been nice and cool,” Powell said. “I enjoy serving these children. They need to know the gospel of God.”
