Daughtery works for the local Society of St. Vincent de Paul twice a week. The group assists those in need with utilities, medical expenses and groceries.

The Archdiocese of Mobile conducted its annual archdiocesan celebration of the Feast of Christ the King which took place on Sunday. It is a long-standing tradition among the Catholic faithful of the Archdiocese of Mobile to come together for this liturgical celebration and witness to the faith.

The Christ the King Procession began at Bienville Square in downtown Mobile and was led west on Dauphin Street to the Cathedral-Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. The Archbishop gave an opening prayer. The liturgical procession led the way, continuing the recitation of the Rosary while various Catholic organizations fell in line in the procession.

Special recognition was given to this year’s recipients of the Christ the King Medal, who have been nominated by their pastors for extraordinary volunteer service for their parish community. The Archbishop was assisted by priests, deacons and seminarians of the archdiocese, along with representatives of the Knights and Ladies of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre, the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice Lady Medalists, and the Knights of St. Gregory. The Men of St. Joseph, Knights of Columbus and Knights of Peter Claver Fourth Degree Honor Guard ushered the procession to Cathedral Square.

Daugherty wasn’t quick to take the praise for her works, though.

“We all do everything at the church,” she said. “I was so shocked when I got the award. It just goes through the Parish council. We aren’t supposed to be recognized by our good works. I am active in the church. This is a one-year thing. I don’t like to praise myself, but it was quite an honor.”

Daughtery’s son Patrick said his mother is very humble.

“She was nominated for the award,” he said. “She just told us it was because she was doing the Lord’s work. I had to look the award up on the Internet to know what it was.”

The family traveled to Mobile with her, as well.

“It was quite a big deal,” Patrick Daughtery said.
