Saints fall in conference play

The LBWCC Saints put up strong efforts, but were swept by Alabama Southern on Saturday at LBWCC in Alabama Community College Conference baseball action.

In the opening game of the series, Alabama Southern grabbed the lead early and was able to fend off the Saints in the final innings to pick up a 6-3 victory.
Alabama Southern got a leadoff double to start the top of the third inning and then loaded the bases with a walk and hit batter.
Another walk from the Saints plated the first run of the game for Alabama Southern.
When the dust settled, Alabama Southern held a 3-0 advantage heading into the bottom of the third inning.
Micah McCaskill was hit by a pitch to start the Saints’ half of the third inning, but was quickly erased on a double play off the bat off Ko Powell.
Alabama Southern added a run in the top of the fourth inning to go up 4-0.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Harrison Morris drew a walk to get the frame started for the Saints.
Gunner Hendrix followed with a line drive over the fence in right for a two-run home run to cut the Alabama Southern lead in half.
Alabama Southern got those runs back in the top of the sixth inning when two runs came into score on a double.
Chauncey Callier led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a ground-ball single to first to give the Saints some life.
Callier moved up to second on an error and then came around to third on a ground out from Jackson Henderson.
McCaskill followed with a single through the infield to score Callier with ease.
Hendrix led the way at the plate for the Saints going 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run score.

In the final game of the weekend series, Alabama Southern used a big fifth inning to knock off the Saints 4-3.
Matt Jones led off the bottom of the first inning with a walk and moved to second on sacrifice bunt from Morris.
The Saints then took an early lead when Hendrix drove in Jones with a sacrifice fly to the Alabama Southern third baseman.
Matt Christian followed with a long home run over the fence in the center to put the Saints out front 2-0.
Alabama Southern cut the lead in half with a sacrifice fly in the top of the third inning.
Morris got things going for the Saints with a single to start the bottom of the third inning.
Hendrix then moved Morris to third with a scorching ground ball through the right side of the infield for a double.
Christian followed with a ground out to third, but the play allowed Morris to score and give the Saints a 3-1 lead.
In the top of the fifth inning, a one-out walk and two-out error gave Alabama Southern the extra at bat that they needed.
With the extra at bat, Alabama Southern swatted a three-run home run to go up 4-3.
The three-run bomb was enough to lift Alabama Southern to the victory.
