Saints fall in conference tourney

The LBWCC Saints put up a fight through the Alabama Community College Conference baseball championship tournament in Ozark, but were eliminated from competition on Monday by Wallace-Hanceville.

LBWCC 6,

SOUTHERN UNION 4

In the first elimination game of the ACCC tournament, the Saints grabbed a lead and held off Southern Union for a 6-4 victory on Saturday.

After a scoreless first inning, Matt Jones led off the top of the second with a solo home run over the wall in left field for a 1-0 Saints’ lead.

Jones then led off the top of the fourth inning with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice fly from Chauncey Callier.

Harrison Morris followed with a single to move Jones around to third base.

Micah McCaskill then ripped a double to into left field to put the Saints on top 3-0.

The Saints continued the offensive push with a double from Ko Powell that scored McCaskill for a 4-0 Saints’ advantage.

Matt Christian then roped a single to left field that scored Trey McMillian and Powell.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Southern Union got a run off a Saints’ error.

Southern Union took advantage of another defensive miscue in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut the Saints’ lead to 6-3.

The Saints gave up one more run in the bottom of the seventh, but held on for a 6-4 victory.

LBWCC 8, ALABAMA SOUTHERN 5

The Saints avoided elimination for the second time in two days after knocking off Alabama Southern 8-5 on Mother’s Day Sunday in Ozark.

Both teams got runners on base in the first few innings, but neither team to could push around a run.

The Saints escaped potential jams in the early innings with three double plays that ended Alabama Southern threats.

In the top of the sixth inning, Jones drew a walk followed by a single from Callier.

The Saints then loaded the bases with a walk to Morris.

The first run of the game then came off a bases loaded walk to Jake Stamps.

Hunter Jacobs followed with a single to put the Saints on top 2-0.

LBWCC padded their lead with a two-run single from McMillian to give the Saints a 5-0 lead.

In the top of the seventh inning, the Saints took advantage of an error to take a 6-0 lead.

Alabama Southern made a charge with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to cut the Saints’ lead down to 6-3.

Taking advantage of another error, the Saints went up 7-3 in the top of the eighth inning.

Morris added an RBI single in the top of the ninth to help keep the Saints alive with an 8-5 victory.

HANCEVILLE 10,

LBWCC 5

Needing a win to avoid elimination, the Saints saw their season come to an end Monday morning when they fell 10-5 to Wallace-Hanceville in the ACCC quarterfinals.

The Saints grabbed the lead in the top of the first inning when Jones scored on a dropped third strike.

Wallace-Hanceville busted the game open with four runs in the bottom of the second inning.

The Saints battled back in the top of the third inning when Callier drove in McMillian with a single.

Morris then grounded into a fielder’s choice that plated Christian and cut the Wallace-Hanceville lead down to 4-3.

The bats for Wallace-Hanceville stayed hot as they took a 7-3 lead into the fourth inning.

McMillian drove in run with a sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth inning.

A slew of walks and hits in the bottom of the eighth inning lead Wallace-Hanceville to a 10-4 lead.

In the top of the ninth inning, Morris drove in Jones with a single to left field, but it wasn’t enough to help the Saints avoid elimination.
