BATTLE AGAINST THE BEST: County All-Stars start tourney off with big win

The Covington County 15U All-Stars kicked off the district tournament with a 4-0 victory over Opp Friday in Brewton.

In the top of the first inning, the Covington County All-Stars retired the Opp batters in order.

Chandler Mitchell led off the bottom of the first inning with a walk and then moved up to second when Bryant Harper reached on a fielder’s indecision.

The Covington County All-Stars then loaded up the bases when Brady Hamrac found his way on with a single.

Opp then got the next batter to pop up harmless to shortstop before Trenton Watson cleared the ducks off the pond with a double to give Covington County a 3-0 lead.

Covington County starting pitcher Clay Ashberry continued to wheel and deal as he sat Opp down in order for the second consecutive inning. Through two innings he had three strikeouts.

Gabe Dunn reached on a walk to start the bottom of the second inning and later moved around to third, but Opp was able to get out of the frame without giving up a run.

In the top of the third inning, Opp got their first hit of the game when Brady James laced a 2-out single.

Covington County got a two-out single from Jonathan Cooley in the bottom of the third inning and then he moved to third on a single from Caleb Meredith.

Dunn followed with an RBI single that put Covington County up 4-0.

There wasn’t another hit until Matthew Cook singled with two outs for Opp, but Covington County’s defense kept them off the scoreboard.

Ashberry picked up the win on the mound for Covington County going 4-2/3 innings with four strikeouts, one hit and no runs.
