Super Regional play starts today

All seven defending state champions have qualified for the AHSAA Super Regional Volleyball Championships and will be in the field when the two tournaments get underway Thursday.

Defending state champions St. Luke’s Episcopal (Class 2A), Bayside Academy (Class 3A) and St. Paul’s Episcopal (5A) will be in the 56-team field at South Super Regional at Montgomery’s Cramton Bowl MultiPlex. The North Super Regional, at Huntsville’s Von Braun Center, will have the remaining four defending champs, Addison (1A), Madison Academy (4A), Haze Green (6A) and Mountain Brook (7A) in its 56-team field.

Sixteen teams in Classes 1A through 6A and eight in Class 7A will be vying at each Super Regional to advance to next week’s 46thannual AHSAA State Championships at Birmingham’s CrossPlex. Thursday’s action gets underway with Class 6A at 9 a.m. Classes 1A, 2A and 4A also play Thursday morning at 9 a.m. Classes 3A, 5A and 7A open play on Friday with first matches at 9. Defending 1A state champion Addison (44-8), going for its third state crown in a row, will be in action at 2 p.m., at the Von Braun Center’s South Hall taking on Cherokee in its first-round game at 2 p.m.

 

In 4A, Andalusia enters the tournament today against Sipsey Valley.

 

In 3A, Opp plays American Christian, and Straughn plays Indian Springs in the first round on Friday.

 

In 1A, Pleasant Home plays Maplesville in the first round today.
