Rite Aid-to-Walgreens transitions begin

The Opp City Council has approved the transfer of a beer and wine license from Rite Aid to Walgreens.

Earlier this year, Walgreens bought a number of Rite Aid locations, including the one at 509 E Cumming Ave in Opp.

More than 1,900 Rite Aid stores – including all of the ones in Alabama – are being acquired by Walgreens, making it the largest drug store chain in the United States. Walgreens expects the transition of all the stores from Rite Aid to Walgreens to take about 20 months, and cost $750 million nationally. The acquisition plan calls for 600 stores to be closed, in most cases, when a Rite Aid and Walgreens are located within a mile of each other.
