Man charged with murder in Brooklyn Road arson

James Benton Horn, age 50, of Andalusia was arrested Friday and charged with murder, second degree arson, and first degree criminal mischief in the June 20th death of Bruce Wayne Nelson.

Deputies were responding to

a call of a suspicious vehicle on Brooklyn Road at 3:45 a.m. Wed., June 20, when they observed a vehicle that had been burned and was smoking at the Nelson’s Brooklyn Road residence. They found his body near the vehicle.

Sheriff Dennis Meeks said earlier this summer that initial forensic reports indicate Nelson was shot and stabbed, and his body was burned.

9 charges in 3 murders, 1 remains unsolved

Local investigators worked with the state fire marshal’s office, as there also had been a fire inside the mobile home.

Horn is being held on a $1 million bond.

The Covington County Sheriff’s Office was assisted in their investigation of the crime by the Covington County District Attorney’s Office, The Alabama Fire Marshall’s Office, The 22nd Judicial Drug Task Force, and the Andalusia Police Department.
