WILDCATS PICK UP KEY WIN: Florala took advantage of timely hits to top Red Level

Florala and Red Level put up strong fights, but it was the Wildcats that took advantage of timely hits to pull out a 2-0 win on Friday night in Florala.

“I felt like we played with a lot of enthusiasm and a lot of grit,” Florala head coach Tyler Zessin said. “We worked this week on having fun, hitting the baseball and fielding the baseball. The three things we didn’t capitalize on Monday when we played Red Level.”

Dixon Drakkar got the start on the mound for the Wildcats and Kade Green was on the hill for the Tigers.

Both pitchers came out pounding the strike zone and keeping runners off of the bases.

Drakker walked a couple of batters in the top of the third inning and Jacob Hammac came on in relief.

Hammac worked out of a bases loaded jam to keep the game scoreless.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Dylan Hobby reached with a leadoff double.

Andrew Aplin came in to run for Hobby and an error allowed Aplin to come in to score the first run of the game.

Nealand Stone then delivered a single to drive in another Wildcat to put Florala up 2-0.

Hammac worked strong the rest of the game and Caleb Wood came in to record the final out of the game.

Hammac picked up the win after allowing just two hits and striking out 11 Tigers in four innings of work.

Wood, Stone and Hunter Adams each went 2-for-3 for the Wildcats.

“Jacob (Hammac) is our horse,” Zessin said. “We are going to ride him. He’s got the arm speed, the off speed and when we can get him in we get him in. We really rely on two other guys to get it started for us and count on our bats to get us the lead. We know when he comes in we are going to have a chance to win the game.”

Despite a strong performance, Green was saddled with the loss.

Green pitched six innings, allowed nine hits, two unearned runs and six strikeouts.

Tucker Livings, Ethan Edson and Bryson Pate had one hit each for the Tigers.

“Kade (Green) gave us a chance,” Red Level head coach Todd Smith said. “Kade worked well, gave us a chance the whole game, stayed low in the pitch count, but we made some key mistakes. We’ve got to play better defense behind him. A couple of unearned runs on defensive errors hurt us. Early in the game, we had some opportunities. We left a lot of runners on base and didn’t capitalize. When they had the lefty that was throwing, we have to be able come through and excite bunts and hit in those situations. We just didn’t hit when we needed to tonight in those situations. Hats off to Florala because they played about as good of a game as a baseball team can. I thought (Jacob) Hammac did a good for them. Coach (Tyler) Zessin is doing a great job. They put pressure on us running the bases and putting the bunt down. They were the better team tonight. They played better than we did tonight.”
