Opp volleyball opens season with mixed results

Opp (1-3) began the 2021 season Saturday, August 21 at the Amelia Rhoades Set-Off Tournament in Kinston.

OHS fell to Geneva 2-0 (18-25, 17-25) and Straughn 2-0 (21-25, 20-25) but rebounded to close the day by winning 2-0 (25-9, 25-13) over Goshen.

Opp started the 2021 home schedule Tuesday with a rivalry matchup against Kinston. The Bulldogs (7-0) continued their unbeaten start to the season with a 3-0 win (25-15, 25-12, 25-8) against the Bobcats.

Cuba Wiggins led OHS with 5 kills and 4 blocks. Brooke Mosley was the leader in assists with 7, and Alli Butler picked up 9 digs.

Opp’s junior high team (1-0) won 2-0 (25-15, 25-15) over Kinston to start their season Tuesday. OMS was paced by Rylie Kate Thrash and Carreline Spears with 7 aces each. Thrash also added 2 assists in the win. Braleigh Nall had a balanced effort with 6 aces, 1 kill, and 1 block while Crislyn Birge also added 1 kill.

The junior varsity (1-0) also won their season debut Tuesday in come-from-behind fashion with a 2-1 victory (22-25, 25-15, 15-11) over the Bulldogs. The Bobcats were led by CB Johnson with 5 aces, 1 block, 3 kills, and 2 digs. Isabella Grissett added 4 aces and 8 digs. Brooke Butler tallied 6 kills, 1 block, and 2 digs while Madie Wilson scored 15 assists.

All three teams will be back in action Thursday and travel to another rival, Andalusia, for a 4 p.m. start.
