Opp continued its best start in program history and began area play with a 3-0 sweep over New Brockton in a varsity volleyball home match Tuesday, Sept. 5.
The Lady Bobcats moved to 10-0 overall and 1-0 in 3A Area 3 with a 25-22, 25-12, 25-15 win. The Lady Gamecocks fell to 3-7 on the season and 0-1 against area teams.
“We have a problem at the end letting up and letting them come back, but they did pretty good overall. 10-0 has never been done before in Opp, and it means a lot to us. This is the greatest start Opp volleyball has ever had, so I’m super proud of them. These girls work hard and are not only good athletes and volleyball players, but they communicate as a team. Volleyball is such a team sport, and these girls work really well together,” said OHS Head Coach Caiden Harrell.
Opp scored the first two points of the match and pushed the lead to 7-2 with a pair of aces from Shelby Greenacre. New Brockton cut the deficit to 8-4 until Ada Blackstock began a 7-0 run with a key block. Madie Wilson had back-to-back aces, and Carnley Johnson and Carreline Spears each picked up a kill for a 15-4 lead. Aniya Barkley then notched two kills and brought the score to 17-8. Spears responded with two straight aces and helped open up a 20-9 margin. Anna Blackmon had two aces and a kill as the Lady Gamecocks rallied within three at 23-20. Amaya Womack delivered a blistering kill for set point as the Lady Bobcats held on and took a 1-0 lead.
Opp took a 4-2 lead in the second set before Cuba Wiggins started a 7-0 run with a kill. Blackstock added another block and stretched the margin to six points before Womack earned back-to-back kills for an 11-2 lead. Spears made the score 14-4 with a kill before Barkley brought New Brockton within single digits at 14-7. It did not stay that way for long when Megan Pinson capped a 7-1 surge with an ace for a 21-8 advantage. Blackmon also had an ace at the 22-12 point, but Wiggins polished off the set with a block and a kill for a 2-0 lead.
The two teams went back and forth in the third set and forced four ties. The Lady Bobcats then broke away with a 10-1 run. Wilson and Brooke Butler each connected for an ace, while Spears had another kill and pushed the lead to 14-5. Wiggins continued her strong play with three kills as Isabella Grissett also had one. Wiggins’ third kill during the stretch took the margin to 21-9. The Lady Gamecocks fought back within eight at 23-15 until Spears had a kill for match point. An attack error brought an end to the match.
Wiggins led Opp with eight kills, two blocks, and four digs. Spears tallied two aces, five kills, 13 assists, and six digs. Blackstock and Womack each added four kills, while Megan Pinson grabbed 10 digs in the win.
