The Andalusia City Council has approved a list of local streets that will be part of a resurfacing project.

The project includes at least portions of 29 streets at a cost of $1.1 million, which will be paid from a 2022 bond issue. Earlier this year, the city council approved a multi-year contract that set certain costs involved in resurfacing.

Work on the projects is expected to begin within the next month, depending on weather, according to Mayor Earl Johnson.

The streets involved in the project are: Merrill Street, First Avenue (bypass to Bellwood Drive), Auburn Avenue, Riley Street, Rankin Street, Pelham Street, McGowin Street, Boutwell Street, Bow Street, Perry Street (Dunson to W. Watson), Avalon Street, Clay Street, Ammons Street, Julie Street, Powell Circle, Second Avenue (Sixth to East Three Notch), Clyde Street, Adams Street, Carlton Street, Ruby Street, Caroline Street, Bradley Street (bypass to Henderson Street), Jackson Street, Bishop Drive, Beasley Street, Calvary/Daniel/First Avenue (LBR to Magnolia), Will Coleman, Midway Drive (from lake to Five Points), Brooks Street, and Camelia Street.

Also approved for repairs was the roof at Springdale Estate. The roof has been leaking for some time, but the costs for taking on the project had been too high; however, a composite roofing material will be used at a lower cost of $36,750. The material, which has the same appearance as the current roofing, was used on another building on the property and is working well, according to city’s director of planning and development, Andy Wiggins.

The roof will have a 30-year warranty. This project will also be funded from the 2022 bond issue.

Other items discussed during last week’s meeting included:

  • approving the transfer of alcohol sales licenses for five Giddy-Up-N-Go convenience stores within the city limits. These stores are under new ownership.
  • approving nuisance abatements for two properties: 108 Osceloa St. and 127 Railroad Drive.
  • approving a change for the date and time of the next city council meeting due to the primary election being held the first Tuesday of March 5. The council will hold its first meeting of March on Wednesday, March 6, noon, in the upstairs conference room of city hall.
