Giving 100 percent is good enough for some, but not for Pleasant Home seniors Gina Davis and Kayla Woods.

Davis and Woods are seniors on the Lady Eagles varsity basketball team and have been teammates since the eighth grade.

Both say that every year on the team is different.

“Last year, we had three good seniors and now we’ve have a younger team,” Woods said. “It’s exciting at times, and we do a lot of crazy stuff.”

Davis and Woods have helped lead the Lady Eagles to finish their regular season at 13-10 overall, and tied with Florala leading into the area tournament tomorrow night.

Woods averages 12 points, four steals and five rebounds per game, while Davis averages 12 points and 3 assists per game.

Having girls coach Kelley Garner as a head coach has provided both an understanding that giving 100 percent isn’t enough.

“Coach is definitely hardcore and doesn’t give any breaks,” Davis said.

“We have to give 110 percent — she requires that of us,” Woods said.

It can be hard for players to step up and take the lead in their last season on a team.

As seniors, Davis and Woods have faced a lot of adversity.

When asked how she has dealt with all of her injuries, Davis said it’s been a challenge.

“I’ve had an unfortunate year as far as that goes,” she said.

Throughout this year, Davis has broken a finger, her nose and has had bronchitis, to name a few.

“I’ve just sucked it up and gone through with it,” she said.

“Gina has faced a lot of adversity this year,” Garner said. “She has done well for us.”

Woods said people on the team have filled essential roles when needed due to injuries.

“Everybody steps up when they have to,” Woods said.

“Kayla had a great senior year — she’s stepped up for us,” Garner said.

Tomorrow night, the Lady Eagles will travel to Florala to play in the Class 1A, Area 3 tournament.

Pleasant Home begins with Kinston at 6 p.m.

Both say they are excited about the opportunity to play in the tournament.

“I think we have a very good chance of taking home the tournament,” Davis said.

Woods said the match up with Kinston will be a good one.

“Kinston is always a very interesting game,” she said. “It’s a physical game, and I see them as a challenge.”

As far as goals this season, Davis and Woods said there is one goal they strive to attain every game.

“To give 110 percent each game,” Davis said.

Davis is the daughter of Jerry and Maria Davis of Andalusia. Woods is the daughter of Kenny and Wanda Woods of Andalusia.

Both plan to attend Lurleen B. Wallace Community College in the fall after graduation.

Before and after practices and games, Davis and Woods join their teammates in prayer.

When asked how big a role faith plays in the team’s life, they say it plays a big part.

“It’s a very big part of our team,” Woods said. “Here at Pleasant Home, it’s a very strong part of our school.”
