With more than 240 participating in the inaugural run, Opp Rattlesnake Rodeo organizers are bringing back the 5K run/walk for a second year, they said Monday.

The event is slated for 9 a.m. on Sat., March 31, and will start and finish at Opp High School. The route takes runners through several blocks of downtown.

“This 5k is a run/walk, meaning there will be two races going on at once. If you register as a runner, you can walk all you want, but if you register as a ‘walker’ you cannot run at any time,” organizer Emily Edgar said. “We are accepting all ages. Kids are welcome. If they can do the 3.1 miles, we’ll let them do it. They can just register like the adults.”

Pre-registration is $25, which includes the race, a ticket to the rodeo and a T-shirt. Deadline to pre-register is March 25.

Afterward the cost increases to $35, Edgar said.

A pre-registration packet pick-up will be held Fri., March 30. Edgar said the (pick-up) time will be announced at a later date.

For those who wait until the last minute to sign up, registration will be held at 7:30 a.m. at Opp High School, the morning of the race.

Edgar said forms can be downloaded at rattlesnakerodeo5k.com, and can be mailed to P.O. Box 192, Opp, AL 36467 or dropped off at the Opp City Schools office on Stewart Avenue.

“We really encourage anyone who wishes to participate to come out and support our cause,” Edgar said. “Money raised will go to fund scholarships for local students.”
