The U.S. Navy man accused in April 2009 of raping and sodomizing a girl under 12 has pleaded guilty and will now spend the next 15 years in prison for his actions.

Robert Joseph Boswell, a 20-year-old Red Level resident, was indicted on five counts of first-degree rape and five count of first-degree sodomy in June 2009.

The incident, which was described as an “unlawful and inappropriate sexual contact with a female minor child,” occurred in January 2007, according to The Star-News archives. It also occurred prior to his activation with the military, where prior to his arrest, Boswell was stationed on the U.S.S. Enterprise and had served as an aviation ordnanceman, person responsible for the maintenance of guns, bombs, torpedoes, rockets and missiles and whose duties also include the stowing, issuing, and loading of munitions and small arms.

Boswell had remained in the Covington County Jail under an $850,000 bond since his June 2009 arrest. On Sept. 24, Boswell entered a guilty to plea to one count of first-degree rape and one count of first-degree sodomy and was sentenced to 16 years and six months in prison.

He was given a credit of 464 days as a result of his stay in the county jail and will be transferred to a state correctional facility in the coming days.
