Opp residents or motorists traveling through the city without proper mufflers or exhaust pipes will be ticketed come next month, Police Chief Mike McDonald said on Thursday.

“The Opp Police Department has received complaints concerning vehicles that are causing both loud and unreasonable noise due to either defective mufflers or mufflers and/or exhaust components that are designed to be loud,” he said.

McDonald said Alabama law specifically states that, “Every motor vehicle shall at all times be equipped with a muffler in good working order and in constant operation to prevent excessive or unusual noise and annoying smoke, and no person shall use a muffler, cut out, bypass, a muffler without baffles or a similar device upon a motor vehicle on a highway.”

McDonald said OPD will be attention to these violations and now through March 8, will issue a warning, but after March 9, violations of this law will receive a ticket.
