The Libertyville town council is set to discuss the discharging of firearms in town limits next week.

A public notice, printed in the Saturday edition of The Star-News, stated the town is looking to pass an ordinance that would make it illegal to shoot a gun on a public street or highway and within 100 yards of a dwelling, public building or domestic animals. It would not prohibit the shooting of any dangerous or destructive animal when necessary to protect life or property.

According to the proposed ordinance, violations are punishable as a Class C misdemeanor by a fine ranging from $100 to $350, plus court costs; however, it is not immediately clear how the ordinance will be enforced, if adopted, since the town does not have a police department or municipal court.

Law dictates that ordinance must go through two public readings and be posted in three different places or published in a local newspaper.

Mayor Byron Dozier said Tuesday the council has not discussed or addressed the proposed ordinance.

The night’s meeting will begin at 6 p.m. at town hall, located on Alabama Hwy. 55.
