A scheduling conflict with area schools means that all children through the fifth grade can enjoy the Alfa/Covington County Young Farmer’s Federation family farm day and petting zoo next week.

The event will be held on Fri., March 15, from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m., at the Covington Center Arena.

Brett Mack, CCYFF president, said the day is a perfect time for children to see what “farm life” is all about.

“In the past, farming used to be a family experience, and the further back in history you went, the more farmers there were,” Mack said. “That’s not the case now. The farms are larger, but there are less individuals with farms.

“A lot of students have never had an opportunity to be on a farm, let alone experience where their food and clothes originate from,” he said. “For some, this will be their only opportunity to have any experience and education in regards to agriculture. That’s the biggest reason we put on this event each year.”

In years past, the event was only open to area kindergarteners, he said.

“There was a schedule conflict on that day, so we decided to open it up to the public,” he said. “We’re going to have all kinds of farm and row crop equipment, like tractors; farm animals such as cows, horses, donkeys, chickens – and of course, the biddies. That’s the best part according to students because they get to hold the baby chicks and interact with them. They really like that.”

Mack said parents must accompany their children to the event. CCYFF members will moderate at each exhibit and be available to answer questions.

Attendees are asked to enter the exhibits at the east end of the arena, Mack said.
