One doesn’t often think of beauty queens joining the military, but that’s exactly what Mary Beth Correro plans to do.

As the 2013 Covington County Distinguished Young Woman, Correro also serves the Andalusia Rotary Club as “Miss World Domino.” She will help open the 38th annual World Championship Domino Tournament today by singing the national anthem, and will be present for most of the tournament, playing dominoes and being photographed with tournament winners.

A recent graduate of Straughn High School, Correro said she believes it is her duty to serve her country as well as her community. She plans to enlist in the Air Force at the end of July. After serving in the Air Force, she plans to continue her education in secondary education in hopes of one day returning to her alma mater as a history teacher.

At SHS, she was a member of National Honor Society, Peer Helpers, Spanish Club, SHS Chorus, a Relay for Life officer, a Diamond Doll, and co-captain of the varsity volleyball team. She also served as the homecoming junior representative for 2011 as well as senior maid in 2012.

She was active in the church choir, and the youth groups of both Christ the King Catholic Church and Mt. Gilead.

An accomplished vocalist, Correro has been singing publicly since age 10. Locally, she has performed in the Covington County Search for Talent, the annual SHS beauty pageant, the Covington County Round Up, and various sporting events. She placed second in Disney World’s American Idol Talent Contest.

She enjoys working with charities and has volunteered for Relay for Life, Cookies with Characters, Operation Christmas Angel, Walk for the Poor, Saint Vincent de Paul Society’s Food Bank, the SHS Annual Trash Pick-Up, Save-A-Life Banquet and many other events.

Correro is the daughter of Frank and Jeni Correro and the oldest of four siblings. The family moved from New York to Andalusia four years ago.
