The next Covington County Habitat for Humanity building blitz will be next weekend.

Over the last several weeks, crews have worked quietly at what will become the home of Shane and Larecia Laney on Airport Road, chapter director Dale Pancake said Wednesday.

The three-bedroom, two-bath home will be the fifth HFH home constructed locally and is the first to be built in the county jurisdiction. To date, two homes have been built in Andalusia, one in Opp and another in Florala. The newest home will be built at the intersection of Airport Road and Oliver Taylor Road.

“And it’s going to go up fast,” Pancake said. “Right now, crews are working to finish plumbing and the foundation will be poured this week. Our blitz will be on Nov. 1 and 2, and we’re going to have this home done in five weeks – our fifth house in five weeks, we say.”

Pancake said that organization hasn’t finished raising the estimated $60,000 needed to pay for the build.

“We’re building it on faith,” he said. “So with that said, we still need donations of all kinds  – material, monetary and volunteers.”

Pancake said on Friday, volunteers will stand the walls and do all the “normal things done at a blitz.”

“We’re going from the foundation up, and we hope to have a roof on it by the end of the day,” he said. “We may get the shingles on and siding that weekend, but if not, we’ll be back out at it the following weekend on Nov. 8 and 9.”

HFH is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing organization dedicated to building simple, decent, affordable housing in partnership with people in need.

Homes are constructed using volunteer labor, and those with all skill-sets are needed at next weekend’s build.
